In skincare, ingredients that soothe inflammation, prevent environmental damage and reinforce the skin barrier are essential. That’s why at Soodox we love zinc oxide.
What is Zinc?
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a white, powdery substance derived from the naturally occurring mineral, zincite.
There is evidence that zinc oxide has been used since 500 BC as a healing ointment, basic antiseptic and has even worked as paint.
For many of us, our earliest memories are of our parents smearing white or fluro streaks of it on our noses or seeing it on the faces of lifeguards and surfers. Zinc oxide is indisputably one of the best forms of sunscreen, but its benefits don’t stop there.
Skin Healing Superpowers
Zinc oxide helps the skin regenerate and repair itself. It facilitates the growth of new tissue, locks in moisture and prevents inflammation. It acts as a gentle astringent absorbing excess oil without clogging pores, and in fact, minimises large pores and tightens skin.
A few day-to-day uses include:
- Nappy rash cream
- Chafing relief
- Acne treatment
- Eczema soothing
- Burns, scars and cuts healing
Zinc Oxide is not water-soluble and cannot be applied on its own, which is why it is usually combined with other active ingredients. This is why we at Soodox have combined zinc oxide with coconut oil, another ingredient found to reduce inflammation, lock in moisture and help heal wounds, due to its antimicrobial properties.
